Hi everybody!  I’m finally back at my desk after some marathon work stretches.  Seems like I haven’t kept the promise to myself to slow down a little.  My apologies if my subscriber friends feel neglected.  I hate to blame “busy times in a busy life” but Copcorner.net sometimes suffers.  Lately, I have changed my mind several times regarding the theme for the next article.  I actually wrote most of one, then trashed it in favor of what I present to you today.

As my readers know, I am not a political pundit by any means.  The things that I believe I do hold dear.  However, with what I believe to be a pivotal election coming very soon, I am still grappling with several major concerns, which I believe may be manifesting themselves already.  See what you think.

First and foremost, I am beyond disgusted the a mass media clearly in love with the Democratic agenda and it’s candidates.  Since the middle of 2007, the media has been trumpeting the good graces of that party and what is proposed if they should win the White House.  Going back a little farther, after the mid-term elections in  November 2006, the media has fallen all over itself to trumpet the coming swing to the liberal left which I believe accurately describes the result of a Democratic victory.  The media has done all it can to endorse a massive expansion of government into all of our lives in a big way.  The popular commentators have failed to present a fair discussion about the loss of many of our personal liberties if this were to happen.  Shouldn’t this be a huge story, and an issue for energetic debate?  Never in America’s history have we faced as serious a threat to our personal liberties as we face now.

Present day popular liberal thinking endorses the government making decisions for the individual citizen.  This philosophy includes things such as how to design planned communities in the future, which means of transportation will be available, what will be taught to our children in their schools as opposed to teaching them to compare, contrast, discern for themselves and evaluate information pertinent to their lives, and what type of health care will be provided.  Their agenda also includes clear statements endorsing wealth transfer from successful people who already shoulder the tax burden to those less successful members of society who already do not pay one penny in taxes.  Why are innovation, rewards for hard work and free market forces completely ignored in such an agenda?

I also believe that the present collapse of many of our financial markets are actually a leading edge indicator of pessimism surrounding a victory by the Democrats.  The price collapse in the stock market reflects a flight of assets away from equities (which will become taxation targets of big government) to safer market vehicles.  I think that the Republicans have appeared to be completely inept and out of touch with free market principles by going along with the ridiculous bailout plan, which is pure socialism at it’s best.  I also believe that the public sees, for the first time in history, a Republican administration exerting control over markets which is unheard of.  All of these things portend pessimistic public thought that the Democrats are poised to win this time.

If the Democrats should win, what will things be like?  First of all, Democrats  would control the executive branch and the legislative branch of the federal government.  Not good.  Not good at all.  Consider this.  There have been rare moments in our history when power has not been shared between the two parties in the process of governance.  When one party is in control, healthy debate suffers and a fictitious atmosphere of mandate permeates the air.  Minority voices are tuned down and legislative issues will not be examined from all angles as needed.  If the Democrats pick up a few more Senate seats, even the fillibuster will not be available to dissenting opinions.  Who knows what types of hare-brained legislation will pass.  This will have a hugely negative effect on efforts to arrive at responsible, accountable government.  Like I said, not good at all.

This atmosphere of Democratic dominance will embolden lobbyists and special interests to swarm the trough of public funding like never before.  They will recognize the unique opportunity presented by this moment in history and public funding will be committed in record amounts after the necessary grease is applied to the appropriate palms.  If you think special interest pandering has been out of control in the past, then you won’t want to miss this.  The resulting deficits that these increased entitlements will create will dwarf our current shameful figure.  The exceptionally poor example set by government in fiscal matters will signal to the world that we have completely lost our economic sense, if we haven’t already.

With the pending retirements of about seventy million baby boomers, Social Security and Medicare will require future bailouts which will dwarf the seven hundred billion dollar figure just pushed through by an irresponsible Congress.  When will it stop and when will fiscal responsibility return?  Are these really our values now as a nation?  Unfortunately, they may be.  Take a minute to think about the consequences.

One last thing.  Have you thought about the possible effect this shift could have on future appointments to the Supreme Court?  If one party controls both the legislative and executive branches of the federal government, where will those nominees come from?  You guessed it, from the same like minded crowd running the other two branches of government.  Now where would we be?  How would decisions by a liberal court effect our Constitution and basic rights?  What changes would be endorsed and ratified?  How many other personal liberties would be in jeopardy?  I actually think that this aspect is the most frightening for the average citizen.  Unfortunately, this very real possibility actually exists.

Fortunately, there is still time to consider these things prior to marking your ballot.  Please invest time and mental effort in evaluating candidates, their stated policy positions, their personal integrity and track records and their suitability to govern.  And please do this for all levels of elected office, not just the big ones.  Also, check out the propositions in your area from all angles.  Don’t just vote according to the ads in the mass media, which are designed to mislead and manipulate you.  Please be an educated, effective voter and don’t surrender your most precious right, voting itself, too cheaply.

All the best, until next time here at Copcorner.net…  Tim
